How much money do I need in a blocked account (Sperrkonto)?
For a German student visa in 2026 you need to show 992 € per month, i.e. 11,904 € per year. This is the amount announced for 2026 (BMI notice BAnz AT 29.08.2025 B1, checked 15.10.2026).
- The figure is tied to the maximum BAföG rate. It is not adjusted every year as a matter of course; it changes only if the BAföG rate changes.
- A Sperrkonto is not the only option: German missions in Türkiye also accept a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter from someone living in Germany) as proof of funds.
- Language-course visas (§ 16f) use a different amount: according to the missions' language-course leaflet you need at least 1,091 € per month. The page shows no update date, so check the current leaflet before you apply.
- Extra funds for a spouse or children are not covered here; ask the mission about family reunification.
