How much does student health insurance (Krankenversicherung) cost per month?
In 2026, statutory student health insurance (KVdS) including long-term care costs about 118 € plus your Krankenkasse's additional contribution per month. For example, with an additional contribution of 2.69 % the total is 141.16 € (under 23) or 146.29 € (23 or older, no children).
How it is calculated (2026, same basis for every statutory insurer)
- Basis: the statutory BAföG need rate of 855 €/month (since 01.01.2026) — whether or not you actually receive BAföG.
- Health insurance: 7/10 of the general rate = 10.22 % → 87.38 € + the insurer's own additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag).
- Long-term care (Pflegeversicherung): 23+ without children: 4.2 % = 35.91 €; under 23 or with a child: 3.6 % = 30.78 €.
Statutory insurers differ only in the additional contribution — check the current rate with the Krankenkasse you choose.
After 30
Student insurance applies at most until you complete your 30th year of life (exceptions: type of education, family or personal reasons). If you are already in statutory student insurance, your membership then automatically continues as voluntary statutory insurance; you can leave only if you prove other cover. So private insurance is not automatically compulsory after 30 — premiums are calculated differently, ask your insurer for the amount.
If you work
- Werkstudent: you are exempt from health, long-term care and unemployment insurance in the job; only pension insurance is deducted. You keep paying your own student contribution.
- Minijob: the employer's contributions do not replace your own student health insurance contribution.
Family insurance
If a parent is covered by statutory insurance in Germany, family insurance (Familienversicherung) may be possible within certain age and income limits — ask the Krankenkasse for the current limit.
The basis is linked to the BAföG need rate; if that rate changes, the contribution changes from the relevant semester.
