Does my health insurance change if I start my Bachelor's after turning 30?
Yes, it can. Students enrolled at a state or state-recognised university are compulsorily covered by statutory student health insurance (KVdS) at most until they complete their 30th year of life (§ 5 (1) no. 9 SGB V). If you start your Bachelor's after that point, this student status is generally no longer open to you.
Exception
The age limit can be exceeded if the type of education or family or personal reasons justify it. The law specifically mentions having obtained university entrance qualification through a second-chance route (Zweiter Bildungsweg). Your Krankenkasse decides — explain your reasons and bring evidence.
What happens after 30?
- If you are already in statutory student insurance: when compulsory insurance ends, your membership automatically continues as a voluntary membership (freiwillige Mitgliedschaft) from the next day (§ 188 (4) SGB V). You can declare an exit within two weeks after your Krankenkasse informs you of this option, but the exit only takes effect if you prove other health coverage. Ask your Krankenkasse when exactly your student rate ends.
- If you arrive in Germany for the first time after 30: whether a statutory Krankenkasse can take you as a voluntary member or you need private insurance (PKV) depends on your insurance history. Ask a Krankenkasse in writing before you enrol.
Keep in mind
- Voluntary statutory and private premiums are calculated differently from the student rate; only the insurer can give you the exact amount.
- Switching to private insurance is a long-term decision, and returning to the statutory system later may not be freely possible. Get advice before you decide.
- The same age rule applies if you start a Master's after 30.
