What happens to my residence permit if I can't find a job after my Master's?
You do not need a job the day you graduate: after successfully completing a degree in Germany you can get a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months (§ 20 AufenthG). It cannot be extended beyond 18 months. If you still have no job at the end and do not meet the requirements for another residence permit, you have to leave Germany — but that does not mean you cannot come back.
Your options
- Job-search permit (§ 20): requires a secured livelihood. Apply at the Ausländerbehörde before your student permit expires — then your current permit is deemed to continue until the decision (§ 81 (4) AufenthG). If you find a suitable job in this period, you apply to switch to a work-based permit.
- Doctorate or further studies: your Master's completes the study purpose, so new studies (e.g. a doctorate) need a new study permit (§ 16b) with admission and proof of funds. One funding example: the DAAD doctoral scholarship, 1,400 € per month since February 2026.
- Other residence purposes: for example, if your spouse holds a German residence permit, look into the family reunification requirements — they depend on your spouse's permit.
- Starting again from abroad: if you find a job after leaving, you can return on a work visa. For a skilled job search there are also routes like the points-based Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte, since 01.06.2024, at least 6 points on the points path).
Keep in mind
- Salary thresholds for work permits change every year — check the current figure with an official source.
- Don't wait until the last day: apply for your next permit before the current one expires.
- Talk to your Ausländerbehörde about your case; the local office decides which documents it needs.
