How much is the DAAD scholarship for a Master's degree per month?

✓ Answered · 2 min read · How much · 129 views

The general DAAD Master's scholarship is 992 € per month (2026). That is the same as the BAföG maximum and the proof of funds required for a student visa (992 €/month = 11,904 €/year since 01.09.2024).

Extra benefits vary by programme

Some DAAD programmes pay additional benefits on top of the monthly rate, but whether you get them and how much they are varies from programme to programme. There is no fixed "package value". Check the DAAD call for your specific programme and your award letter to see which extras apply to you.

For comparison: the DAAD doctoral scholarship has been 1,400 € per month since February 2026.

Can I work while on the scholarship?

On a student residence permit the limit is counted in days, not hours: since 01.03.2024 you may work 140 working days per year (Arbeitstagekonto, § 16b (3) AufenthG). Student assistant jobs at the university (HiWi) do not count. The often-quoted "20 hours per week" is a social-insurance rule for Werkstudent status, not a residence-law limit. Also check whether your scholarship terms themselves restrict side jobs.

Keep in mind

  • Other foundations pay different rates, which can change — check each foundation's official page for the current amount.
