Germany is one of the most popular study abroad destinations for international students. Free public universities, a strong economy, and livable cities are the main reasons for this interest. In this guide, we summarize everything you need to know, from the application process to daily life.
The University System in Germany
The German higher education system is divided into three main types of universities:
- Universität (Klassische Universität): Academically and research-oriented. Medicine, law, engineering, and basic sciences are generally taught here.
- Fachhochschule (FH / HAW): University of Applied Sciences. More practical, industry-oriented programs with mandatory internships.
- Kunst- und Musikhochschule: Institutions specializing in art, music, and design.
First decision: Do you want an academic career or quick employment in the industry? This choice determines the type of university.
Tuition Fees
Most public universities are tuition-free. The only thing you pay is the Semesterbeitrag (semester contribution fee) of 150-350 € per semester — this amount generally includes a public transport ticket.
The situation is different for private universities:
| University Type | Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Public university | ~600 € (contribution only) |
| Private university | 5,000-20,000 € |
| Baden-Württemberg Bundesland (non-EU) | 3,000 € |
Application Timeline
In Germany, the year is divided into two semesters:
- Kış yarıyılı (Wintersemester): October - March. Applications are between May and July.
- Yaz yarıyılı (Sommersemester): April - September. Applications are between December and January.
Most bachelor's programs admit students only in the Wintersemester, so the July 15 deadline is a critical date.
Language Requirement
If you are applying to a German-taught program, a C1 level German certificate is required. For English programs, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+ has become standard.
